Chapter 5

“David was shaken,” Hector told them, “when he came home that night. He’d encountered the Wilkerson women before, but not in his place of work. She’d just barged right in and told him what he was going to do. Like he was nothing more than one of her peons.” Hector asked the men if they could hear her all right. She was told they could hear her and that they were recording this. “Good. That way, if something happens to me, like going to sleep and never waking up, you’ll have a good accounting of the events that day.” She started again on what David had told her.

“‘I can’t do that. It’ll mean my job. And that will make it so the person who killed her gets off scot-free. What if he did this to you or one of the women you hang around with?’ Eita told him that he worked for her. David, of course, denied that and told her that he did not.

“‘Actually you do,’” she told him. “‘And you’ll do as I tell you or else. I’m a Wilkerson and being that, I get everything I want when I want it. The man who killed this woman, he works for me as well. Not that she was all that important in the larger scheme of things, but I need Ben out of prison and where I can contact him when I want someone knocked around a bit to make them see things my way. And before you even bother asking, that would mean the sons of the women that I hang with, as you put it.’” David asked her what she was talking about. “‘Ben is my hired gun and fists, I guess you could say.’”

Hector gathered herself up. This telling of this story, it was something she’d never done before. She’d been afraid for most of the ensuing years, knowing they’d come after her if she did anything. Now that they were dead, she felt it was well past time that she did something about what had taken her David’s life.

“David told her that he would not sign a false report for any reason. She then pulled out a gun and put it right to his forehead. He told her that if she killed him, there would be questions.

“‘So you’d think. But no, there won’t be any questions because I have greased enough hands in this little town that I get what I want. I’m a Wilkerson, and what we want, we get. Killing you will be easy for me. It’s not like it’s the first time I’ve done it. So you go on ahead and sign the death certificate. However, if you don’t, I’ll kill you, then I will kill your lovely wife. It would be a shame, don’t you think, that both of you had to die over something so simple as signing your name to that little piece of paper?’

“David did what he was told, so thankful, he told me, that
